Paternity testing
How testing works, who takes part and understanding results.
What is a paternity DNA test?
A paternity test compares a child's DNA with that of an alleged father to investigate whether he is the biological father.
Testing can be arranged for personal information or for a legal purpose. Tell us how you intend to use the result before booking, as collection and identification procedures may differ.
How long do DNA test results take?
Standard results are generally available within seven working days. The time needed depends on the test, sample quality and laboratory processing.
Immigration tests and more complex family relationship cases may take longer. We will discuss the expected turnaround for your case when you book.
What do I need for a paternity DNA test?
A standard paternity test generally involves the child and alleged father. The mother may also take part if available. Identification documents are particularly important for legal or immigration cases.
Samples are usually collected with a cheek swab, which normally takes only a few minutes. Blood samples are not usually required for standard paternity testing. Contact us to confirm the documents and arrangements for your case.
Can a paternity test be done without the mother?
Yes. Testing can usually be carried out using samples from the alleged father and child alone.
The mother's sample may provide additional information in some cases. Tell us about your circumstances so we can explain the appropriate testing arrangement.
How accurate is a paternity DNA test?
A paternity report may show a probability of 99.99% or higher when the genetic evidence supports inclusion. If the tested man is excluded, the laboratory report states that conclusion using its validated criteria.
The actual findings depend on the samples, genetic markers and laboratory analysis. Our team can help explain the wording in your report.
Can two possible fathers be tested for the same child?
Yes. Testing more than one alleged father may help distinguish between possible biological fathers.
The supplied additional-father fee is US$100 for each extra alleged father. Contact us to confirm the total quote and the most suitable approach for your case.
Can twins have a paternity DNA test?
Yes. Testing can be arranged for twins. The approach depends on whether the twins are identical or fraternal and on the question being investigated.
